It's time to bring up that dirty word again. You know, the one that's practically shunned upon, understood by few, but loved by the insane. I'm talking about doom, that often times slow, sometimes stoner, sometimes death style of metal that you rarely see selling shit tons of records. Yet the diehards are still there with open arms. The main man of Yob, Mike Scheidt, is as big of a doom fan as they come, and you can taste the passion in every riff he invents.

The Unreal Never Lived is a continuation of the Yob evolution, showing a bit more rock and roll flavor via the opening track with big riffs and rolling drum tempos. Song length is not sacrificed, however, with 4 tracks clocking in at 50 minutes. The band continually reinvent themselves with well rounded songs, especially in a doom sense and the vocals dare tread any ground, including Geddy Lee meets early Vince Neil highs and guttural black metal lows. Yob successfully ties all the subgenres of doom together in one tight knot and set an example of how it's done.

Last track, "The Mental Tyrant" starts out very Neurosis-like with trippy effects and an epic beginning that meanders its way eventually into the heaviness. As a 3 piece, Yob is as expansive as Rush, and as heavy as Warhorse putting them into a class of their own. Yob are innovators, leaders of their game, inventing a new sound, one that will be laughed at if copied. Yob has amazed once again, and continues to be one of doom's undisputed champions.
