Musashi's Review (3/31/04, Mulcahy's, Wantagh, NY):
Awesome show. George Lynch looks all tan and buff and rocked out for a short set. Then Yngwie "are you gonna eat that?" Malmsteen came out and played for over 2 hours. He did all his guitar-flinging antics while his leather tights threatened to burst at any given moment. It was typically loud and spectacular. Rudy Sarzo was playing bass and looked like: 1) he was in good health, and 2) he was having a great time. As usual, the band took a backseat to Yngwie's extended solos. Even more than in the past, the bandmates were in a purely supporting role. There was only one short extended keyboard solo which morphed into a drum solo. The usual back and forth between the keyboards and guitars was limited to only a few of his numbers.
He played mostly tunes from his new album, Attack!!. However, he did play a few classics like "Far Beyond The Sun," "I'll See The Light, Tonight," and "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget." He even played a cover of Deep Purple's "Burn." Awesome.
Although Yngwie is still one of the most amazing guitar players EVER, his music is boring. After two hours all his songs sound the same. Two hours of him playing blinding arpeggios is more than enough. Nonetheless, if you want to have a nostalgic night of ear-melting guitar playing and mullet-headed people-watching, then go check out this tour. Despite being bored by the songs, my friend Chris and I couldn't help looking at each other with our jaws agape after each of Yngwie's many solos wondering how that fat bastard could play so fast and cleanly. It is obvious from watching him and his unnatural intimacy with the Stratocaster that Yngwie never puts down his guitar - even while he is eating.
As clichéd as it was, Yngwie kept yelling into the mic that he loved the fans and loved to rock and just wanted to give a great show. Maybe it was the beer talking, but I really think he meant it - especially when he wished us all a Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too, Yngwie!
