Oh for the days of old when bands stayed true to their roots. Once upon a time a demo came this way from Canada featuring a creative dark score and the industry stirred with anticipation. Now along comes their sophomore effort, Allure of the Earth or something like that. I'm not certain it's even the same band anymore, as they've taken a turn (wrong) toward folk and acoustic ballads, say it's not so! Wonder what bloody words and bent knuckles said about this aberrant mix? The only song that reminded me of the days of yore is "Dragged Across a Forest Floor." It's obvious, chief songwriter David Gold (please) moved in with his girlfriend and sister, who play along with the keys and backing vocals. Obviously a pure ego-trip for Mr. Gold, with his picture plastered all over the inside cover, along with naturalistic views of the countryside. I'm not certain what metaphysical trip they're on but check out these song titles "Summers Envy," "The Sun Was in My Eyes," "The Will to Give" ... does this sound like a metal album to you - oh the disappointment! The band is obviously celebrating their joy of nature and delight of the season, but aren't we supposed to be talking about metal here?I do give the band credit for a well-produced record, the acoustics are superb and female backing vocals are mixed well, but perhaps more suitable for the church choir. Unfortunately, blackened vocals are virtually non-existent and the prominence of spoken word, along with the bright acoustics is down right depressing, especially in Boston traffic! Lyrically speaking there's plenty of dark and lonely diatribes for everyone, but the music simply leaves no impact on contact.
