Hel's Review (6/21/01):
Favorite tracks: "Fuel the Fire" and "Stings of Conscience"Gothenburg, Massachusetts is not an actual place. It is a phenomena, a state of mind. It is an unlikely pairing of two otherwise incongruous sounds into one amazing amalgam that essentially seems to have happened en masse in a certain geographical location. Don't look for it on any map - but do look for it in your metal.
Unearth, therefore, is a Gothenburg, MA, band. Their music contains the requisite mixture of hardcore and European melodic death to qualify, and no-so-coincidentally enough, they're from that general geographic locale. But you mustn't make the mistake of quickly dismissing Unearth as "another of those" and simply assume they are another Shadows Fall - far from it, in fact.
Here we have pure hardcore vocals, intense drumming with impressive fills tossed in everywhere, incredible guitar work and a very tight overall group. The musicianship in this band is astounding, and the instrumental portions of the album are my favorite by far. The songs are complex yet straightforward, and a hell of a lot of fun to listen to.
The only drawback for me is that I don't particularly like the hardcore scream on the whole, and this singer follows that formula to the letter. Otherwise, I think I would be loving this album from start to finish. As it stands, I think they're great and I look forward to the opportunity to see them live, and see how it all comes together in that context. I think you should all check them out, too.
