This is not your typical metal band - not even close - a bit odd, to say the least. Historically speaking, Ulver formed in the 1990’s and released a number of demos and soundtracks. Perdition City came in 2000 and received good reviews from the heavier than thou Kerrang Magazine. In 2003, they released a ten-year anniversary CD which garnered significant attention from the Norwegian entertainment industry. The release of Blood Inside is a logical continuation of the band’s musical abilities and grand madness. The album was self produced and is described as an experimental musical fantasy camp featuring electronics, pop metal, and spoken word (scared yet?). This is a conceptual and purported evolutionary effort from Ulver. Their music is quite unconventional, and certainly would not compare them to King Crimson, but structurally there are similarities. Its tad bit confusing to read their conservative musical score as it veers from folk based melodies towards tepid rock sounds. On the positive side, the record is well produced by Ronan Chris Murphy, who's been in the booth with notables including Zappa and Tool.
The track listing provides the conceptual delivery, say "Dressed in Black," "Blinded in Blood" and "In the Red," ... blood inside - get it? There are a few clever and tight musical tracks to consider, however, the flow is often disjointed and monotonous. Basically, there’s a lot of instrumentation going on, but no one’s truly home. I have quite the open mind when it comes to experimental music, but this one is beyond my grasp.
