  • Solomon's Review:
Type O has offered us another collection of tunes that pretty well follow the standard set by the last couple of records. World contains long, slow songs that revolve around relatively simple guitar parts and keyboard passages, with Peter Steele's deep, resonant voice added as the crowning touch. The band's music contains an odd mixture of elements: while the music is generally dark, the melodies are often "happy" sounding, like "Green Man" off the last record and "Everything Dies" and "Pyretta Blaze" off the latest disk. Type O is always balancing out the gloom and doom with a sense of humor, as well. Goofy tracks like "Skip It" and lyrics like "Seems three years, though maybe four/Someone drops dead whom I adore" prevents anyone from taking the guys too seriously. A lot of metal bands are pretty consistent in nature, particularly with black metal, as the music revolves around similar moods and ideas. Type O is "negative" most of the time, but the odd mix of melancholy, joy, and humor makes them hard to pin down in terms of image and reputation. I guess that's what keeps them from being mistaken for anyone else. World contains plenty of memorable melodic ideas, particularly in "Everything Dies," "Pyretta Blaze," and the Beatles medley at the end of the record. The most interesting tracks are "Who Will Save The Sane" with its swingy rhythm and "Pyretta Blaze" with a chromatic riff that would make Tony Iommi jealous. World is a fairly predictable record, but at least Type O can be counted on to sound like Type O and not some metal-to-alternative commercial suicide leap.
