So my old friend Solomon was in town for a visit, and Soilent Green was playing at the Whisky. You don't need a calculator to figure that one out. I'd been meaning to check out Demiricous out for some time, and Soilent Green is one of my all time favorite bands. The only sensible thing to do was hop in the car and drive to Hollywood.

Demiricous had just taken the stage when we arrived, and the sparse crowd was enthusiastic in their response to these thrash-a-rific lads. The buzz surrounding them has been good, and their video has been getting some good play on Headbangers Ball, so I was curious to see what they would be like live. The Whisky can be a tough room, particularly when under populated, but the boys soldiered on unfazed and delivered a solid set.

The night was warm, so I stepped outside with my girls from Metal Blade for a bit after Demiricous’ set and when I went back inside as The Acacia Strain began to play, it was as if I were walking into a completely different club. Suddenly, the place was packed – and I mean packed. The trendsters poured out of the woodwork for this band, who, when I last checked about 5 minutes ago was relatively unknown. Wacky. Now, everyone knows that hardcore is not my bag, and when the twelve-year-old with the disposable camera tried to elbow me in the head for the tenth time (what the hell was with that?) I bailed. Fuck that. I decided I really wasn’t cool enough to watch this band, so I went back outside.

Soilent Green was the reason I was at the Whisky on this particular night, and I eagerly went back inside when it was time for them to take the stage. The good news was the irritating hardcore kids had cleared out, the bad news was that there suddenly seemed to be even fewer people present then when Demiricous had played. Sure, it was after midnight on a week night, and the band was going on late since the overnight sensations had overplayed their slot, but honestly, it was just plain sad. Shame on you, L.A. Shame.

Despite the fact that there were pitifully few people left to witness their glory, the Soilent boys knew that this is the audience that has bought album after album, and would most likely walk out of the venue with some bit of merch on this night, and that this devoted few deserved nothing less than their best. And the best is what they brought. While there was not a big crowd to witness it, the diehards moshed to their hearts content and a great time was had by all. I proudly departed with a brand-new tank top, which I have since gotten many compliments on, and wear often. I continue to be baffled at the lack of support this band is receiving from the metal masses – if ever there were a band deserving of attention, this is it. Not some flash-in-the-pan, generic, just-like-every-other-band-out-there hardcore crap. Soilent Green earned my five skull score, with a little help from Demiricous and absolutely none from The Acacia Strain, at least in my book.
