Brutal Battery!!! Holland's own Severe Torture releases their third album on Hammerheart Records after their U.S. debut of Feasting on Blood, and I could not be happier!! These guys are professionals when it comes to an unstoppable bludgeoning, with their hyper speed attack on Death Metal. When I first heard Feasting on Blood I was astounded, and really not sure what to make of it. This band, along with Disavowed and Pyaemia (also of Holland), are some of Europe's finest when arguing about Brutal Death Metal. There is Death Metal, there is Melodic Death Metal, and then there is Severe Torture. They more or less have created a whole new genus of Death Metal themselves, along with their partners in crime.Misantropic Carnage follows along the divergent path Feasting on Blood took a few years back, along with some twists and turns. Severe Torture utilizes a variety of guitar techniques in order to capture a specific atmosphere. Present are captivating riffs that are skillfully done and manage to hold tune underneath brutality, which is what makes them so great!! They can produce non-stop battery that is totally full of melody, growls delivered with tremendous velocity with a Corpsegrinder appeal, and drum patterns that are ferociously non-human. All of these qualities are divine gifts establishing Severe Torture's individuality.
I was fortunate enough to witness the intensity Severe Torture is known for when they were on tour with Disavowed, Deeds of Flesh, and Disgorge (USA) back in 2002 (I believe). These guys leave you disoriented, confused, and absolutely shell-shocked live with their extremely profound performance, and when they have finished their set you are still trying to gather what just happened. Seth van de Loo is easily one of the most talented newer drummers of his time that I have seen live.
In conclusion, Severe Torture has been one of my more favorite bands throughout the past three years, and will remain close to the top of my list!!! Recognition must be given to this deserving band that remains more underground than others, so help them out!! Be pulverized!!
