Continuing the never-ending onslaught of reviews of re-issues is Saint Vitus' fifth release, which is inappropriately named V. All the doom-Obsessed (no pun intended) know Saint Vitus to be alongside the likes of Candlemass, Pentagram and Trouble as the forefathers of doom metal (um, oh yeah those Black Sabbath guys, too). V marks a pinnacle of a concept, the culmination of years of a rediscovery of a lost genre invented by four British blokes 20 years beforehand. The album is most like the Vol. 4 era of Sabbath in that it is some of the most diverse and organic doom recorded. Each song is laced with a rich, earthly tone as the speed and the ideas behind each song twist and turn. Songs such as "Ice Monkey" and "I Bleed Black" drive at a mid-pace while "Patra (Petra)" and "Jack Frost" completely crush the listener with cries of anguish. Without a doubt this is a fantastic and mandatory release in all that is sludge, mud and grump (don't ask me how I affiliated all three of those adjectives). If you missed out on these guys 15 years ago, there's no time like the present to get re-acquainted.
An awesome metal and rock release that could very well appeal to everyone.
Favorite song: Patra (Petra)
