  • Abyss' Review:
With a concept that's more disturbing than the entire Jackson clan put together, Pig Destroyer return with a a real gem. Mixing grindcore and death metal isn't really all that rare nowadays, but it is rare that the music comes across this powerful. Add to this the eerie imagery and packaging, and this becomes more than just a good listen, but an all around metallic experience.

From the opening narration to the story told on the inside cover, it becomes obvious that this album was well thought out. The imagery is disturbing and morose, which makes you feel dirty and unsafe at the same time. The music itself is incredible. From chaotic white noise and blistering blastbeats to mosh inducing breakdowns that reek of hook and groove, this album has it all.

The formula has been done before, as like many a grind act they have 22 tracks for under 40 minutes of music, and you often have no idea when one track ends and another begins unless you're looking at the counter of your CD player. Where this album really stands apart, however, is in how well crafted it is. The attention to detail circulates throughout the entire work, and there are plenty of subtleties that reward the more attentive listener with a much more rewarding experience. There is so much more to this band than blinding speed or break-neck rhythms and over the top vocals. Songs like "Mapplethorpe Grey" and "Snuff Film at Eleven" get one's head bobbing and heart pumping. The songs are so well written that they come across as accessible despite their blaring insanity. I guess the point is that this album is just damn fun to listen to. Brutal, brilliant and creepy.

The stalker aspect to the story line is done so casually it makes the whole concept even spookier, and I find myself looking over my shoulder more often when I'm listening to it. It's been out over a year at the time of this writing (yet another album that fell through the cracks), and it still makes it onto my cd player every once in awhile. This was probably one of the most underrated albums of last year, or it at least didn't get the attention it deserved. One word review: Killer.
