Abyss' Review:
Origin's self-titled release was a brutal opening statement to what death metal should be about. This, their sophomore effort, proves that the debut was no fluke, so all of you who missed this band last time around, it's time for you to start paying attention. Not only is this a great record, but it is also a very unique one. Most 'brutal' American death acts have become much more groove-oriented, playing on a sense of 'catchiness' to set them apart from the pack. Or others drift into the grind/death crossover bit, alternating tempos and styles at such a head spinning pace that you end the experience disoriented and (sometimes) missing the point. Origin's new record does neither. That's not to say there's no groove or chaos, they just don't come across that way. This album is heavy. And I say heavy, I mean fucking heeaaavy. It's about as subtle as a punch in the crotch.
This isn't the type of album that you sing (or even scream) along with. You don't even bang your head and push your horns in the air. What you do do (no, not the voodoo that you do) is calmly hold your head in your hands and try to prevent yourself from killing and razing everything in your immediate area. This album is a sonic melee of violence. Of unbridled aggression. Of bloodlust.
Despite its ability to stir up violent emotions, it's not pure force. The songwriting is excellent and the presentation is disciplined. And while this album isn't for everybody, it is for every metalhead, especially those who foam at the mouth when presented with a pummeling rhythm section. The only really disappointing thing about this record is the sparse running time; it clocks in at just under a half an hour. Once word review: Dense.
