Sometimes you just want a piece of sponge cake. No strawberries, whip cream or fancy drink on the side, just good ol' fashioned sponge cake. That's what you get with Obituary. Frozen in Time can probably be considered the most appropriate album title of all time. They didn't try to reinvent the wheel here folks, nor should they. You get ten songs of dry, pummeling drums and guitar that hearken back to the sound of Cause of Death and The End Complete, and I for one wouldn't want it any other way. This album doesn't surpass Slowly We Rot or Cause of Death, but it doesn't need to either.

Being an old fogey of the early nineties death metal scene (I can't actually believe that phrase exists, but I digress) it's nice to see one of the best return to bludgeon the newbie masses who missed them the first time around. While this isn't any more accessible than their other albums, it's an easy one to recommend for a first time Obituary experience. It's ironic that as similar as all Obituary albums sound, it's refreshing now since most bands seem to be trying to out blastbeat and grind each other into submission. There's also something comforting about seeing the words Obituary, Scott Burns and Morrisound on the same inlay card.
