  • Abyss' Review (9/16/03):
Nunslaughter is a band that has been around the metal underground in some form or another since the late eighties. If many of you haven't heard of them it's understandable, as this is only their second full-length release. The rest of their material consists of 7"s and splits. They are now the brainchild of the sole remaining original member known as Don of the Dead.

Nunslaughter are old school if anything. Their music isn't technical, their production isn't slick, they simply spew forth workmanlike riffs under a minimalist blanket while singing about death and Satan (don't act surprised, their name is Nunslaughter after all). They have a solid, but stripped down, approach not unlike what Venom pioneered in the 80s. And like Venom, their lyrics walk a fine line between comedy and blasphemy.

The band is a little hard to take seriously, especially with songs like "Satanic Slut", but they put things together in a way that is entertaining. In many ways I like them better than Venom, as I find myself laughing at their lyrics, which are screamed and easily understood, but also maintaining a certain admiration for their no-frills accomplishments. They've made a relatively accessible record, seemingly by accident, what with its stark, but competent, production and riffs that bounce along despite their heaviness.

Don't get me wrong though, this isn't the album for the average Arch Enemy fan, but fans of Venom, Deceased, Sodom and old Hellhammer will probably find a lot to appreciate here. One word review: Stripped.
