October 31st was a fitting release date for the new Neurosis EP, Sovereign. The music is eerie, chilling and dark. Not comic book scary, but intensely haunting. And it is not a contradiction to say that this EP is a continuation of the mellowing of Neurosis. Like a wise old ghost that would rather touch you with a chilling hand than simply say "BOO". The music found here is very well thought-out and contains layers of guitars, drums and vocals, yet there is room for each sound to resonate and breathe. This is psychadelic music to feed your dark side. The guitars are down-tuned, the vocals are harsh, and the drums cacophonous. Yet each plays off the other at different levels of intensity to create a dynamic sonic tapestry. Sovereign is made up of just four tracks, but it clocks in at over a half hour and is well worth the price of admission. In fact, there is nothing lacking here and it is not simply filler between albums. Sovereign stands alone as a fine piece of work very representative of Neurosis 2000. In addition to the music, Sovereign is enhanced with a CD-ROM multimedia section that includes trippy sounds and visuals similar to what VoiVod did with the enhanced Negatron CD, yet much more advanced. Neurosis is not just a band, but a multimedia experience and this format suits them well. Surely they have their eyes on the future where they will be able to integrate the sound and visual even more seamlessly. As a final bonus, there is a link to a special section of the band's website where disc owners can download additional tracks. These guys are pushing the boundaries. I can't wait for technology to catch up with them.
