Necrophagia has been around for over a decade and has been one of those bands that I (as well as many other people that I know, at least...) have put off listening to for one reason or another. This CD was pretty much my first introduction to one of the legends of horror/gore grind so I did some reading on the band. I was surprised to find out that Phil Anselmo played axe with them for a while (ah, that wacky Phil and the 500 bands and projects he has going on...). I'm sure that this sort of exposure is really going to push the sales of this CD but as a quick warning, Phil isn't on this album.

Anyways, I have to say I was pleased with The Divine Art of Torture. Musically this is in no way, shape or form, groundbreaking. This is your mid-to-low paced death metal recording heavily inspired by horror films (specifically the Italian directors). There are loads of thrash and old school death riffs thrown abound from song to song. And while the licks aren't jaw-dropping or inspiring, they're sure as hell cool. This is the kind of album that you play really loud to annoy people. In essence this is your stereotyped-death album...but in a good way. It's obnoxious but enjoyable. It's just a really fun album.

Killjoy stands out as a great vocalist, pulling off some wicked screams on each track. His voice is very original in that it tries to emulate different sounds and characters from horror films as opposed to trying to out-scream the music or get the lowest gutturals humanly possible. It definitely works in the band's favor and adds to the atmosphere of the recording.

Fans of obscure horror flicks are going to love this because there are tons of references for them to pick out. Fans of death metal and gore grind will never put this on an all-time favorites list, but will definitely appreciate it for what it is. Fans of Cannibal Corpse and Impaled will like it. Fans of Suffocation and Deeds of Flesh will think it's too slow. I say the hell with it, turn your brain off every once in a while.

    Definitely for headbangers.
