As has happened to me so many times, personal obligations caused me to miss the two bands on the bill that I most wanted to see: Kataklysm and Goatwhore. I was mortified to learn later that evening that Kataklysm had been the very first band to play – kicking things off at the unreasonable time of 6:30. WTF? That is an absolute travesty. Under no circumstances should they have gone on before Macabre, let alone at 6:30. When I finally walked into the venue it was during the set change following Goatwhore’s set. I seem cursed to always miss this band every single time they play – in fact the last time I saw them was at Milwaukee Metalfest in 2000. Sad, very sad.

But at least I would be able to catch all of Napalm Death and not have to worry about making down to the photo pit for the first three songs. Not only was I down there in plenty of time, but I was there too early and spent a long while twiddling my thumbs waiting for the curtain to open. Finally the curtain parted and Napalm Death launched their assault. The last time Napalm Death came through Hollywood they played the Key Club, supporting Nile. That was almost two years ago, and I ultimately bailed on their set because the venue insanely packed. This time, I had a cushy photo pit situation, with only one other photographer sharing it with me, plus the VIP balcony hook up, so I was able to watch their entire set in sublime comfort. Therefore, I can definitively say that these grindcore pioneers crushed. Peppering their intense set with commentary on the election insanity of the night before, the band kept the fans entertained on a number of levels.

Cannibal Corpse was up next, and while I always look forward to seeing them and they consistently put on a good show, I have to admit their set is getting beyond predictable. I know the fans love it when Corpsegrinder dedicates “Fucked with a Knife” to the “ladies in the audience” – but even if they’re not tired of it, I certainly am. Same set list, same banter - every time. Great band or no, I need them to shake up their routine a little to keep me engaged. Frankly, I got bored pretty fast, and having fulfilled my photographic obligation and also having sufficiently caught up with many of my metal friends, I elected to cut out a little early. So perhaps the encore was fresh and earth shattering, but I somehow doubt it. Hands down, Napalm Death ruled the night.
