The Shape of Things to Come is the prelude to the full length The Horror of Beauty from Californians My Ruin. Heralded as one of the myriad of Hard Rock/Metal hybrids, My Ruin really just play some pretty straight-forward Hard Rock, and although they are trying hard to be "in your face," this effort comes up quite short of that desired effect. This five song EP features three original songs, a cover of the Plasmatics "Sex Junkie" and a radio edit of one of the aforementioned originals ("Made to Measure"). The songs on this CD are bland and not memorable in any way, with boring guitar riffs and poor production. None of the originals stand out much more than one another, and the attempt at being "deep" on the track "Unmanageable" does not work. I don't know what they were going for exactly, but I do not know the band personally. It seems they are concerned about their dark image first and foremost, and concern themselves with their music later. To top it all off, vocalist Tairrie B. sounds (predictably) much like Courtney Love, but without any of the emotion or personality.
My Ruin were recently voted the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Band" in Los Angeles. Is this the best L.A. has to offer? I found it hard to listen to this release in its entirety, and this is just five songs. If this is any indication, the full-length should be another difficult listen. Don't waste your money on this one.
