My Ruin is a band that just never did it for me. No particular reason; L7, 7 Year Bitch, and the Gits are all enjoyable. Yet this just seems forced, coming directly from a studio in Hollywood with all its glitz and glamour. The riffs are actually decent, heavy and catchy. Better yet solos, or attempts at solos, actually exist on this album. When the vocalist is separated from the music, something about this is actually appealing. It's just too bad the singer seems to be on the never-ending rag.

Being slightly familiar with the older material, my memory does not recall them having a Sludge/Grunge influence throughout the tunes. From what I recall they were more along the lines of the typical Korn rip-offs that existed in the past decade. Now that the sounds from the soil have reached a certain level of popularity, they have adopted this sound. The cover of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" is all the evidence to show they are reaching into other trends, from the past and present, for influence on the current sound.

Years ago when I first heard this band laughter ensued for a great while. Now this is not a vast improvement, but compared to before they've actually got something going here. If it wasn't for the clichéd lyrics, and possibly more balls for a singer who wants to be accepted by the guys oh so badly, this would be a decent album. Much to my surprise, this is not nearly as bad as I expected. Wait, she's screaming again, spoke too soon.
    2 out of 5
