Now don't get me wrong, I do like the goth rock sort of thing. Moonspell's newest however, and everything since Wolfheart just hasn't done it for me. These dark rockers are most certainly veterans with almost a decade under their belts, but some bands lose it with time. Moonspell, unfortunately, are one of those bands. Darkness and Hope is an album that yearns for a more commercial success, but ultimately is chock full of music incapable of delivering the goods.

These vocals for some reason just don't sit well with me here. The ultra deep vocals just sound ridiculous to me after a while. I could deal with Wolfheartbecause the music was leaps and bounds better. Now that they have simplified the music by tenfold, the vocals are right in your face, and it's not a good thing. Don't get me wrong, he does his job just fine. It's just that I'd almost rather listen to James Hetfield's "whoaooo" or "yeayeahhh" than this. Almost. The rest of the music doesn't do much to make up for this vocal factor either. Driving guitars, unnecessary keyboards and boring rock beats fill the albums entirety. And the cover of Ozzy's "Mr. Crowley" is different but much worse than the original. Once I press play, I'm just waiting for it to end. Boring.

Moonspell have past their prime a long time ago but apparently somebody still listens to 'em. If I want to listen to the goth/metal crossover thing, I'll listen to Babylon Whores or To/Die/For. A couple moments on Darkness and Hope may raise an eyebrow here and there, but for the most part, this'll work as a substitute for sleeping pills. It's got the darkness. Now all it needs is hope. 11 tracks, no winners. Take as needed for sleep.
