Abyss's Review (8/13/04):
It seems ages ago, but this band was poised for the next step. With "Space Lord" in heavy rotation on MTV, and the whole 'garage rock' thing taking off with the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age things looked good for Dave & Co. Powertrip was a killer, if polished, album and I was happy that one of my favorite workhorses of a band were finally making it big. Then it happened. And when I say 'it' I mean God Says No.That album put the brakes on all the momentum in the mainstream as well as with long time fans. And while I don't think the album was a complete travesty, I haven't listened to it since it came out. Happily, for the loyal fans anyway, Monolithic Baby brings the band back to its most successful sound. Sure it's still really polished, but the grit is still there. Basically if you liked Dopes To Infinity and Powertrip you want to run out and pick this one up.
This is stoner/pop/metal/rock at its best, complete with buzzing guitars, a 70s wardrobe, and lyrics that don't make any sense ("Pray for the daddy that smacks you up, and drink from the specimen in my cup" . . . right). The album starts a little slow, but makes up ground quickly, delivering a cornucopia of songs, ranging from stuff that could easily be considered radio friendly ("Unbroken (Hotel Baby)") to more mellow rock ("There's No Way Out Of It"), to all the other tripped-out devil worship we've come to know and love.
Monster Magnet are back, and while I don't consider this their best album, it's easily their best since Dopes and it has most likely found a place on my top ten list for the year. Thank god for this Satanic hippie drug thing. One word review: Awesome!
