OK. I hear there's a lot of anticipation for this release. Why you ask? Well, I asked the same thing. The answer is that Misery Index has a fairly impressive resume. The band consists of 3 former members of Dying Fetus (only 2 on this EP, Sparky recently joined on 2nd guitar) and an ex member of Pessimist. To me that is no big news, as I had only heard one Dying Fetus CD years ago and was unmoved, to be honest. Since that time, I've been hearing better things and lately they seem to be the next big thing in brutal death metal. Well, I guess some serious lineup changes have occurred since then and I really don't know the details. I am guessing that all that commotion caused the formation of Misery Index. Quite honestly, I'm impressed.

The things that are nice about EPs are their short playing time. I'm not sure that I have the tolerance for a full album worth of death metal, especially from a band that I've never heard before. The minute I pressed play I was hit with a wall of a Suffocation-esque blasts and busy fretwork with guitars played at the speed of light. The album continues in this manner alternating between ultra fast blasts and breakdown mosh parts. I think the latter takes away in some occasions, but for the most part does not bring down the overall effectiveness of Overthrow. The spotlight of the band is easily drummer Kevin Talley, who has been heard on numerous Dying Fetus CDs as well as being a past member of Suffocation (when was this?). Needless to say this guy is on fucking fire. I've heard good things about this man but have never had the opportunity to see or hear him play. Wow. This guy plays like he has a fire under his ass. Very fast. And that is a good thing. The guitars provide the rest of the vital brutality with an equaled precision and the vocals get the job done in a more shouted growl combo which actually supplies more aggression than your average death growl. As a whole, it sounds fast…pissed…and heavy.

Those into the grindier side of things, take a peek this way. This thing is full speed ahead through 4 originals and an impressive cover tune, Terrorizer's "Dead Shall Rise" (free bonus skull for that!). As a debut, it couldn't have been handled any better. Fans of Dying Fetus, Suffocation and perhaps even Malevolent Creation will be drooling once they hear this one. And don't sneeze while listening to this, as you may miss half the album. This thing is short and sweet, the way a debut should be. 5 songs in 15 minutes, leaving with your pants down and the job unfinished. I'm sure the full length will be greeted with open arms. Check it out.
