Escapi surprise me every time with the off the wall releases they put out on DVD, but god bless 'em because somebody out there is thanking them for it. This time up is Merciless, not to be confused with Mercyless, the latter being the better of the two in my opinion. This Merciless has apparently been around since the dinosaurs walked the Earth and they're still going strong. Perseverence is a virtue sometimes. The band feature in their ranks Entombed drummer Peter Stjarnvind, who is easily the highlight of the band. The rest of the group wear their influences on their sleeves, with early Motorhead, Voivod and Bathory being a good indication of what to expect from this fearsome four-piece. DVD 1 contains a fairly lengthy performance in Sweden, which offers a good representation of what this band look like in the live. All the material is a bit on the sloppy side, which I'm sure is part of their old school niche, but the video footage is pretty much pro.
DVD 2 contains footage from the 2003 Hultsfred festival as well as a few videos, a biography and a discography section. The biggest complaint by all will be the fact that all this could have fit on a single DVD, and therefore been cheaper in the long run. In any event, this is for the most hardcore of the hardcore Merciless fans. I honestly think they sound much better on record than live, but if you're looking for raw unadulterated death thrash, you've come to the right place. Rip the sleeves off that denim jacket, and prepare to be thrashed.
