Hel's Review (2/20/04, The Knitting Factory, Hollywood, CA):
Finally, LA was to be treated to the mighty Mastodon for the very first time. Arguably one of the best bands on Relapse’s formidable roster, this headlining show was a notable event I simply could not miss. I ended up arriving in the nick of time, and found the Knitting Factory to be sold out, yet not uncomfortably full, which is something that always makes me very happy – the status of a sell out, without the pain of an over-sold show.

This was an all-ages show, and there were quite a few youngsters in the audience, as unkempt as the foursome onstage, and most of them were crushed up in front of the stage, joyfully so, from the looks of things. While the sound stuck me as occasionally iffy, and there seemed to be the odd technical difficulty, overall their set was was, as I have come to expect from Mastodon, ferocious and highly entertaining.
“March of the Fire Ants” closed out the evening to a stupendous response from the crowd, with most of the squashed teens lustily singing along at the top of their lungs. All in all, I would say that Mastodon’s Hollywood debut was a stunning success. I can’t wait for them to come back again, and hopefully next time they will get to headline at a club that doesn’t end things early to turn into a disco club.
