Reviewing a DVD is often a much different ballgame than just reviewing a CD. Not only do you get a visual perspective of the band, but you often get the behind the scenes footage, band videos, and every other bonus sort of feature they feel like dishing out. Manowar is one of those bands worth experiencing on a DVD, because you really have to see it to believe it. They call these guys the kings of metal for a reason, because they ARE, whether you like them or not. I was never a huge fan, but after the five plus hours of footage I've seen on this double DVD, I've got tons more respect for 'em.DVD 1 takes us on tour with the band, showing short pieces of performances from all over the world in front of many thousands of diehard metal fans. I marveled at the size of the crowds in attendance, the playing abilities of the band and the god-like effect they have on their followers. There's proof here that Manowar have some of the most dedicated fans and groupies, as well as having one of the largest road crews and the loudest equipment. There's proof of the massive amount of women who have no shame lifting their shirts in the name of metal and making out with the band members right on stage. There's also a Manowar style wedding right on stage with two fans and a Manowar initiation where a fan becomes a "true" metal warrior. Bonus footage reveals some more live footage, an introduction to their crew and many behind the scenes bonus goodies.
DVD 2 is a live set taken from the Ringfest in Germany, done of course with exceptional quality and runs through 11 tunes in true Manowar fashion. A video collection takes us through nine videos from past and present that you'll probably never see on MTV or the like. Bonus materials include the makings of most of those aforementioned videos and a couple more of the documentary sort of pieces. Highlights include seeing Joey DeMaio doing his "Flight of the Bumble Bee" piece on bass and DeMaio taunting the crowd to follow him down to the station to incite a riot if he gets arrested for playing one more song. Manowar are hard to take seriously, but this DVD helps confirm that their legacy is indeed REAL. They are all fantastic musicians and deserve to be right where they are. Hell on Earth Pt. 3 does a fine job of capturing tons of footage, while not boring the viewer. Fans of the band will have no problem dishing out the 30 plus dollar asking price. If you are a relative newcomer to the Manowar world like I am, it is recommended that you witness the Kings of Metal at least once in this fashion. The rumors are true, Manowar kills!
