It’s no secret that I’m a big Lamb of God fan. So when Terror and Hubris showed up, I immediately laid claim to it. I wasn’t really sure what a Lamb of God DVD would be like, but in my wildest imagination, I don’t think I would have dreamed up this. The main feature is done in a documentary style format, with interviews with the band members, both individually, and as a group. It is well structured, with a clear theme for each of the sections, spanning topics from how they first met, to their thoughts on both the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival and Hellfest (most of the live footage was shot at these), to an entertaining “Blair Witch”-style spoof, in which they track down one of the band members embarrassingly discarded jeans and tell the tale in grisly detail.
I was slightly disappointed with two aspects of this DVD. First, the overall length, even when the extras are included, is surprisingly short. Second, and more importantly, one of the band’s biggest strengths is their amazing live performances, and there are shockingly few of these – only short versions of three songs appear in the feature itself. While there are a few more in the “extras” section, these same songs are repeated there. The rest of the “extras” are their older music videos (except “11th Hour” which apparently cannot be included due to the CNN footage it features), a DC Shoes commercial, and the highly entertaining contest winner footage.
What you will most take away from viewing this DVD is a sense of the band members’ individual personalities and the relationship between them. From the evidence presented here, you cannot help but conclude that it pretty much is all fun and games with these guys. Need more proof? Check out the commentary tracks, which are included both for the feature and for most of the extras as well. While they themselves admit at some point during the commentary for the feature it is pretty useless (yeah, I’ll take that dollar guys!) it is silly entertainment that will endear these guys to their fans all the more.
Terror and Hubris will most be appreciated by those who are already big fans of the band. While an argument can be made that it would be a fun way to introduce people to the band, I think there is just too little live performance footage included for that to be very realistic. This covers the human aspect of the band far more than the musical. Fortunately, Lamb of God is a band just bursting with personality, so it is great fun to watch. This is definitely worth picking up, particularly considering the under $10 price tag.
