King’s X is a band that, today, primarily writes songs for their fans. It very sensibly follows, therefore, that any new album they put out will be beloved by their long time fans, but perhaps not so loved by newcomers. I would not recommend that a brutal death fan who has never listened to King’s X pick up Black Like Sunday - I honestly don’t think they’d get it. But from the perspective of someone who has been an avid fan of the band for longer than probably either they or I would like to admit, this is a rockin’ record. This is not a “metal” record in the sense in which most of the Metal Judgment readers regard the term, but it does contain the hallmarks that caused the band to receive this classification way back when – distorted guitar riffs and incredibly proficient musicianship. The soulful bent they have always displayed has long taken a more prominent role in the band, and if you survey the King’s X catalog as a whole, this is the clear next step in the obvious progression their music has been taking for quite some time.
At the end of the day, this album is for King’s X fans, and perhaps for open-minded musician types who dig some R&B from time to time. I will always consider King’s X to be a metal band and there is enough guitar distortion and the like on this record to support my claim. From my perspective, I’m always happy with their albums because they are a great band and I would like to see stick around for as long as possible. And if you are interested in getting into them – go see them live – you’ll be a convert forever.
