Words cannot explain my excitement upon receiving this album for review. Godflesh, for years, has been one of the bands that I hold in the highest regard. The music Justin Broadrick created with his former incarnation has filled these two eardrums of mine with ecstasy. Sending me on trips of despair, agony and, in a twisted way, joy. As now with a new face, and new substance that has been dubbed Jesu.A battle exists, being a huge Godflesh fan, between the blind love I have for this man's music, and the high expectations upon hearing Justin's new "band." When you expect too much, disappointment is almost always in the cards. Fortunately, for once, this is not the case. While this is not a completely different style of music, Jesu slows things down a bit. Overall the music is more subtle, each riff tiny shards of glass cutting into your body.
Justin's vocals are a delicate layer over the jagged melodies. A child's whisper; it all seems so innocent. Whitewashed, while the ugly beast beneath the veil invades your insides, molding to your bones and twisting at your gut. This is the beauty in darkness. A place, in the mind, that most are too afraid to even recognize its existence. Jesu very well may be the ghost derived from Godflesh, for this album will possess your soul.
