In the vein of Puya, here's a band that has successfully mixed Latin beats with metal. The first time I heard Ill Niño was after the Cradle of Filth concert when Death handed me their two-song sampler CD and said, "Check these guys out, I think you'll like them." He was right, I do.More or less, most of what I said about Puya would also apply to this band. Ill Niño also combine funky beats with death metal screams, but the reason I'm giving them 4 skulls instead of 5 is because they seem to have tried to be more accessible and mainstream. At times the singing-- when it is singing, as opposed to guttural utterances-- almost sounds like pop! It doesn't feel good to say that, because I am enjoying the album very much, and it will probably make my ten best of 2001, but I can't deny that some of the enjoyment is rather guilt-ridden. "God Save Us" and "If You Still Hate Me" are the first two songs on the album and they were the ones on the 2-song sampler that hooked me. There is a reason they were put on that sampler, they are the hardest songs on the album with the least amount of pap, I mean pop. Songs like "Nothing's Clear" and "No Murder" have long stretches of choir-boy clean vocals that detract from Revolution/Revolución's machismo. Or, as Musashi would say, this album is lacking the extra testicle. I still think it is a good band and a well-done album, and you could probably have sex to it quite nicely. There are both tender and brutal parts to the album, mimicking the act itself... I have to go now.
