This release surprisingly captured my attention even with its true heavy metal hero promotion. This genre is not my preferred format but Icarus Witch has done a very nice job recreating the concept of heavy metal without cliché hooks and posturing. They’re from steel town, aka Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a town not known for its metal, pardon the pun. Anyway, this band hasn't been around that long, actually since 2004, beginning with the debut recording of "Falling off the Edge of the World" released on the Black Sabbath compilation A True Metal Tribute to Black Sabbath; other bands included on the disk: Iced Earth and Racer X... you get the picture. The band's success landed them on another compilation: An All Star Salute to Alice Cooper. These songs were produced by Eric Klinger who's also done work with Pro-Pain, a band I've seen and hung with many times. He's also behind the board for Roses on White Lace, a fine heavy metal and hard rock album, recognized accordingly.Icarus Witch weaves their magic into this metal laden dirge, constructing and deconstructing powerful sounds. The musical score veers through aggressive guitar tracks, segued with bits of melody and subtle transitions. The band delivers a well-executed product; the musicianship speaks for itself. They're releasing a new CD next month on Magick/Cleopatra Records, also home to Motorhead, Cinderella, Dianno, and MSG. Interesting to note, George Lynch and Frank X. Aresti (Fates Warning) make special guest appearances on the record, which is pretty cool. The band also will be shooting a video for the title track, "Capture The Magic" with Swedish producer, Mats Lundberg of Doom Films (Children Of Bodom, Tristania - great band!).
The future looks bright for the witch as they are confirmed for the Chicago Classic Metal Festival in May and Headbangers Open Air Festival in Germany next July, which will start their European tour! Good luck to these dragon rockers!
