  • Pestilence's Review:
"Finally I have band that is just straight up evil music." This quote from guitarist Sammy Duet (Crowbar, ex-Acid Bath) pretty much sums this band up… fucking evil! Its not Deicide goofy evil either; I bet Satan actually likes this band! Considered black metal by some, this album is far from the standard fare. It actually took me several listens before I could even attempt to pin down the sound these guys have captured. There are black metal, throaty, gargled growls, some clean vocals (well, sort of clean I guess) AND death metal growls (sometimes double-tracked with the black metal vocals). On the drums you get blast-beats, 80's style thrash snares and some slower more creative beats and fills (straight from the swamp, boys?). Throw in the blazing speed we have come to love from the 90's black metal guitars along with chunky riffs reminiscent of Celtic Frost and Venom, and even slower, almost doomier, brooding passages, and you still probably don't come close to what these guys have assembled in the package of GOATWHORE. You end up with changes everywhere, from song to song certainly, but more importantly juxtaposed right inside, too. I know some of you just want your metal to be fast OR slow, and you can't deal with the almost complete mood changes that come with the some of these transitions in metal music, but GOATWHORE manage to keep everything full-on evil no matter where you are in a song and no matter what the tempo at the time. As a matter of fact here's where you can definitely find the genius of Acid Bath and Solient Green in this band. Not with the sound at all, but with the pure genius of the writing of opposing complimentary passages. For tunes containing haunting melodic passages check out some of my favorites like "Under a Dark God", "The Beauty in Suffering", "As the Reflection Slowly Fades" and "Commanding the Legions of Hell". For some quick in-and-out grindy-er fare, hit up "Nocturnal Holocaust" and "Perversions of the Ancient Goat". If you want to hear a song illustrating how Deicide should be writing their newer material (I mean come on guys—if you want to slow down a little bit try to actually write something creatively fresh), give a listen to "Invert the Virgin". There's even something for you My Dying Bride fans in the form of "Graveyards and Dead Angels". I guess that's pretty much it, these guys have taken everything great about metal and put it all into one package, starting with Venom and including every other great thing along the way. So if you are looking for metal that encompasses the past, present and future of heavy music, this band will destroy and consume your pathetic little soul. That's right, 5 smoldering evilly satanic skulls! (Sorry Ben F., its not my fault Sammy is so consumed)
    5 out of 5
