One of the more deserving of death metal bands, one that has stood the test of time and still continues to out-death the competition, has finally graced the world with some eye candy. Live Blasphemies is a double DVD from Sweden's Dismember and it will easily tear the limbs from your body one by one. Featuring a live, 11 song performance from 2003, and a chronological history lesson of the band, there's enough Dismember in here to please even the biggest Dismember junkie.Disc one features a powerful live performance from 2003, in which the band rip through their entire catalogue, even touching upon their least favorite, Massive Killing Capacity (my personal favorite) album. From the trademark chainsaw guitar sound to the intense drumming of Fred Estby to the head banging mayhem, this is death metal the way it's supposed to be done. I like the fact that the in-between Swedish song banter has subtitles for us non-Swedish speaking fans, especially when he dedicates "Skin Her Alive" to all the ladies in fine death metal humor. One can't deny getting pumped up from the intensity of a Dismember live set brought right to the living room.
Disc two is a well put together history of the band, which features lots of behind the scenes footage and raw live performances from the band's shaky beginning to their current professional stature. You'll see the band in their primitive years hacking it up, as well as some of their later festival performances and drunken antics while on the road. There's also an extensive recent interview with the band that gives some insight and fills in the blanks. For a band to last this long, and still be so passionate about what they do is nothing but a trademark of true metalheads, which this band will absolutely be until the bitter end. For fans of the band, or the curious new kid on the block, this DVD will give you a bone-crushing performance and history of one of the forefathers of death metal.
