Amongst the several dozens of sub-genres of metal and rock that I can only tolerate in Dixie-cup doses is hardcore. If it's done well, I love it (Dillinger Escape Plan's Calculating Infinity was my favorite album for almost a year straight). If it's not done well, it can be one of the most tedious and insulting experiences I endure. Disengaged fall into the latter category. The Ocean is a 10-track kick in the balls of hardcore-leaning-closer-to-metalcore-with-subtleties-of-punk. Influences such as Deadguy and Converge are prevalent on this release, along with a paper-thin tone that does nothing but hinder the weight of the music played. The vocals are your typical "Rarf rarf rarf!" teen-angst whine that never diversify or show modulation. Unless you enjoy hardcore and don't mind using razor blades to trim the hair inside of your ears, Disengaged will prove to be a headache.I suppose that my biggest compliment on The Ocean is its use of samples, which on the title cut are truly chilling.
One word review: Meh.
