Abyss's Review:
Well, here we go, another EP that has only three new songs and some scattered covers, strategically released to take advantage of our vulnerable moments of Deceased withdrawal that inevitably take place in between records. I hate this damn format because it just calms down the cravings enough to make me want the next album all the more. It's like coitus interruptus, while you were technically having sex, you still end up having to jerk off. Let's face it, sex without coming just isn't as much fun. Want proof? Just ask any of my ex-girlfriends. This is metal, not a methadone clinic. A few weeks ago, Cradle of Filth came out with another one of these teases, and it broke the mold. It was so damn good that I couldn't help but get my money's worth out of it (it actually might have surpassed their last full length. Time will tell.) Anyway, I'm not going to be soft and recommend another damn EP, you got me!?! I'm not going to do it. I don't care what's on it. I don't care if it is Deceased. I don't care if King Fowley does do high-pitched screams, or covers of some of the songs that originally got me into metal, or if there are three kick-ass new tunes. I still think it sucks, sucks, sucks...Oh, who am I kidding? I can't stay mad at you, King. What's a critic to do? EPs just suck, it's a fact. Actually, I think it's a principle of physics. But I haven't been able to keep this damn thing out of my CD player. Deceased are a killer band and they are just about as pure metal as you can get. When I think metal, without any specific genre in mind, I think of 2 bands. The first was always Overkill, but then a few years ago I saw Deceased for the first time and I had to amend my definitions. A large part of my life since has been dedicated to getting to know this band better and that's been one hell of a fun ride.
The three new tracks on this record smoke. From "Mausoleum", to the ambitious "Victims of the Master Plan" (in four parts), to the pace-setting "It's Alive" (based on the classic movie), they're all that a Deceased fan could hope for. "Victims..." is the definite standout on this album, however. It just leaps right out of your speakers. In fact, I'm here to say that this is one of my favorite Deceased songs of all time. It's speedy and wistful, with cool riffs and an awesome pseudo-melody.
The covers seem well-chosen as well. "Reaganonomics" from DRI is the only track that I don't have an opinion on. Tankard's, "Zombie Attack" seems like it could have been on Fearless Undead Machines after getting the Deceased treatment. Anthrax's "Deathrider" brought me back to early high school when I first started listening to metal and Warfare's "New Age of Total Warfare" is brimming with admiration and integrity. So I'm happy with my little Deceased fix, but how long will it last?
I know I said I won't going to recommend this one, but alas, I can't help myself. Its name is Behind the Mourner's Veil, but these guys had me from "Behind..." (Wow, that line sounded a lot better in Jerry Maguire).
