"It's better than Fearless Undead Machines!" That's what my friend Pestilence told me about the new Deceased album after he had listened to it for a few spins. Me, being the cynic, immediately chalked it up to 'irrational exuberance,' to quote Alan Greenspan, figuring he was just really excited to have the new album and he would eventually calm down and come up with a less extravagant assessment. I mean, after all, any guy who has like eight rabbits and doesn't live on farm obviously has issues anyway...

Shortly after all this I obtained the album for myself, and his initial critique doesn't seem nearly as much of an excited utterance. In fact, the more I listened to this record the more I thought his premise had merit. As The Weird Travel On might very well be my favorite Deceased record. One thing's for sure, it is definitely one of the best records of the year so far.

Despite King's recent health issues, he sounds great, as does the rest of the band. The album production complements the old school sound of the music by making it sound gritty yet completely clear. The guitars have that nostalgic 80s buzz to them, but the rhythm section avoids the thinness that plagued the sound 20 years ago. In short, this album utilizes all of the cool shit about old school heavy metal, but corrects all the weaknesses.

The songwriting also honors the old school aesthetic, melding riff after riff and lead after lead into an album that, song after song, is intricate enough to be interesting, but is played loosely enough to be fun. When I think of plain old genre-less heavy metal, this is what I think of, and it's a beautiful thing. The songs are also really catchy, just begging to be sung along with. Listen to "The Funeral Parlours Secret" and try not to sing along with "Death...has...set him free!" I'm serious, go ahead. I'll wait...

    Told ya.

The end result is that this is an album that belongs in the collection of every discerning metalhead. Old school vibe, crisp production, great songwriting and a completely metal attitude make this as close to perfect as we metalheads can ever expect - considering most of the artists we listen to live lives that probably make even carnies nervous. One word review: METALLLLLL!!!!!
