  • Abyss' Review (9/18/02):
This album is simply a great listen from start to finish. Don't let the fact that this band is on Victory Records fool you, these guys are metal through and through. More surprisingly, instead of it being some metalcore crossover type thing, it's firmly planted in the European melodic death metal style, and boy does it shred. It's almost unfortunate that it is on the Victory label, just because it might not get into the hands of a lot of the people who would enjoy it most.

While many may see them embracing a sound that is becoming oversaturated, their unique subtleties make this more than just another Gothenburg record. Firstly these guys put a decidedly American spin on things. The production is much less slick than most of the like-minded acts out there, and while this album retains melody, the melodies generally belie anger and frustration rather than anything remotely sweet. Perhaps this is some sort of hardcore influence, or maybe my mind is preconceiving that. Ultimately it doesn't matter either way.

The guitar work is the most remarkable thing on the album, as these guys go from mosh riffing to melodic leads effortlessly. The songs are well crafted, showing an awesome sense of groove, but also the ability to rip and tear. End result is this comes across as a powerful and heavy album despite the melody present. Although it is much easier to compare this album with those well-known Swedish bands, these guys also have some stuff in common with bands like Unearth and Shadows Fall, especially when it comes to song structure. But hints of other bands are all we really get from these guys, as there sound is mostly their own.

There really aren't any really weak parts to this album. The choruses get a little repetitive sometimes; you know, when the singer just sings the same line over and over. It gets annoying in a few places, but doesn't really detract from the rest of the disc. And the rhythm section isn't overly impressive, as it kind of just sits back and lets the guitars steal the show (something I'm actually all in favor of). The vocals are your standard growling, but done more than competently. Put all of this together and you have a sold piece of work that demands your attention.

I feel I must recommend this to not only everyone who likes melodic metal, but also to everyone else, because this is a different, decidedly American take on well mapped sound, and it's done with heart and integrity. One word review: Awesome.
