Abyss's Review (8/6/04):
There is little doubt that Carcass were one of the best metal acts of all time. If you don't agree with me, I guess we just have completely different tastes. Actually, fuck that. It has nothing to do with different tastes, if you don't like Carcass you're a jackass. Period. That being said, Choice Cuts is a 'greatest hits' collection that is obviously a last ditch effort for someone to make money off of the name. This album has been delayed for quite some time, but it seems everyone's happy now and the band has given their blessing. Of course, the first problem I have with this record is its title. The band Impaled already has a throwback record with this same moniker, and while normally this wouldn't be a big deal, we all know Impaled are directly and heavily influenced by Carcass, which can easily lead to confusion. But aside from that, the biggest problem with this record is I'm not sure anyone really needs it. It is a standard 'greatest hits' that takes a couple of songs off of each album, and the simple fact is that we all pretty much own all of the albums already.
Unlike Wake Up && Smell The Carcass, this record has no unreleased material. The Peel sessions from 1989 and 1990 are here, but they are largely just a curiosity. The sessions aren't produced well at all, and pretty much only work as a tool of nostalgia.
The only real reason to pick this up is if you're interested in a complete collection. If you are one of the ignorant who somehow want to use this to get into the band, don't bother. You might as well just buy their whole catalogue (Swansong is optional) because there isn't really a safer bet for quality metal. One word review: Repetitive.
