Abyss' Review:
Blood Red Throne is the brainchild of ex-Emperor/Satyricon member Tchort, a Norwegian with a taste for American styled death metal. Proving that you don't have to come from the swamps of Florida to be able to lay down thick, groove laden riffs amongst guttural growls and alternating speeds, Affiliated With Suffering is a worthwhile disc for anyone with even a passing interest in death metal. While we've heard a lot of this style before, there is no doubt that these guys are more than qualified. The most impressive part of it all is the guitar sound they've achieved. It is the perfect mix of distortion and clarity, giving a buzzsaw quality to the faster parts, but allowing the breakdowns to remain thick and chunky.
The only criticism I have is that there is some filler on this disc. None of it is bad, but every once in a while you find yourself sitting through a lackluster song. These songs aren't irritating, just unremarkable or boring. However, the high points on the disc more than make up for it. The title track is all the evidence you need. I'm actually a little scared that the Norwegians seem to be catching up to us in this regard, I guess we'll have to pick up whaling to level the playing field.
End result, this is a killer album, but not perfect. It is quality through and through, but may disappoint those who long for the ever-expanding sound of Tchort's previous bands. You're not going to get your Emperor fix here. You will, however, get a disc well worth your money. One word review: Awesome.
