So this record rocks. Well, it's supposed to. It grinds away with sadistic intensity. Breakdowns, awesome samples, furious headbanging sections, funny song titles ("Fuck Her Like You Paid For It" has now become a regular motivational phrase amongst my friends and myself) it even slows down nicely in parts so you can really mash your fists into the floor. But I get the feeling that throughout this album there is something missing. They grind hard, but they don't have the out and out brutality of Ion Dissonance, they are technically sound, but lack the virtuosity and originality of The Dillinger Escape Plan, they combine some of the great aspects of grind and death metal, but don't streamline them as well as Despised Icon.I want to like this record, and it's actually pretty good. At nineteen minutes it's easy to overlook the sameness of most of the songs and get into the groove of some of the better tracks and laugh at some of the samples, there is even a cover of S.O.D's "Fuck the Middle East" which is a nice touch. It doesn't have much replay value, but for a couple of quick listens it can satisfy even the most judgmental backpack wearing spin kicking metal hipster's inner mosh and that is something that can't be overlooked.
There was a time when I probably would have ejaculated all over this record, hailing it as one of the many new up and coming spazz grind/death/tech phenoms, but lately this sound has gotten a bit tired and unless it's done perfectly or takes the ideas somewhere totally unexpected, it's just not that interesting. I can put on Simian Hybrid Prototype and enjoy it for the nineteen minutes it lasts, but there isn't much to come back to. So unless you've got a boner for this sound you can skip this and stick to the essentials, i.e. Ion Dissonance's latest face melter.
