I have to point out, simply to get it out of the way, that Ed Mundell of Monster Magnet is in this band... but I'm not going to do the Bitchwax the disservice of calling it just a "side project." With this second album, the band has proven that it has a life of its own, and while in a similar vein to Monster Magnet, there are differences between the two bands. Monster Magnet is kind of a get-high-and-sack-out-in-front-of-the-Playstation band, while The Atomic Bitchwax is more of a get-high-and-grab-your-skateboard outfit. In general, the Bitchwax has more energy, just as much groove and fuzz, but doesn't fill your skull up with as many buzzing insects while you listen to it-- except for the end of track 9, "Solid," which is what I am listening to now, and here come those bees into my ears, oh lord. But I digress. Only about half of the ten tracks on this album have lyrics, and the ones that don't are rockin' little instrumental pieces that remind me very much of updated versions of surf music by The Ventures or other bands my parents used to listen to. They convey the same urgency to hurry up and do some sort of extreme sport in a very nonchalant manner. The lyrics on the rest of the songs are simple, at times clever ("Yeah the talk was so cheap I bought five") and don't revolve around finding the wizard and blasting off to the sun and the other usual cliched stoner lyrics. "Play the Game" and "The Cloning Chamber" feature organ accents, "Smokescreen/Cast Aside Your Masks" begins with a robotic admonition that "we are aware of your underground resistance" and everywhere on the album the listener is treated to Ed Mundell's excellent guitar solos.
