You ever eat something that tastes so familiar, yet you can't pinpoint what food it's really like? Welcome All Shall Perish to your listening palate. This is 100% USDA death metal. Not old school or new school, and not copying any specific band, but it sounds like a good friend you haven't seen since 1993. A nice thick, meaty production, slow, mid-paced and up tempo riffs with death growls that sound somewhat reminiscent of Frank Mullen (Suffocation) but with the added harsh low-pitched death scream. I prefer this change of pace in the vocal patterns over someone like Trevor of The Black Dahlia Murder’s diametrically opposed grunt/scream (which comes across too forced).

The band refer to themselves as "melodic death metal," but that term conjures up the impression of sweeping arpeggios and sappy interludes. Fear not death metal weenie, this IS brutal death metal, nothing more, nothing less, but never boring (cough, ORIGIN, cough). I guess you can say some of their blast beats and mosh riffs have the Suffocation/NY style riffing, but this doesn't sound anything like NY/Canadian death metal. It sounds like, well, um, DEATH METAL.

The Oakland, CA band plan to release their follow up album at the beginning of '06 and I'm already onboard. And really, isn't that what it's all about?
