Musashi's Review:
Some people have been saying that I have gone soft because I have been giving out a lot of high scores in my reviews as of late. Well, I can only respond that lately, the demos I have received have been really good. This week, however, is an exception. Wind Wraith's self-released album, "The Fortune Teller's Gaze," is an excellent example of what dedicated musicians can do with time, money and talent. "The Fortune Teller's Gaze" is well produced, well mixed and generally a good CD. The musical performances are good. Drums, guitars and vocals are all recorded very well and sound excellent for a self-released CD.Wind Wraith embrace their Eighties roots by paying homage to bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and Mötley Crüe. I am certainly a big fan of eighties hair and metal bands, but I do not find any comfort in Wind Wraith's dated style and sound. I have two complaints about this CD: one, it sounds like it was made in the Eighties, and two, the songs are really bad. The charm of bad bands from the Eighties is that they could write really catchy songs and rock out with their cocks out.
Basing you sound and style on the look and feel of the heyday of metal is great. There are many bands out there that still have that classic sound and style. However, the bands that truly succeed are the ones that manage to write good music. It is not that Wind Wraith are untalented, it is just that they have not yet learned to craft great metal songs. Given some time and some practice they will probably uncover a few gems but as for now I find The Fortune Teller's Gaze to be rich on form and poor on substance.
