  • Metal Militia's Review:
Chunky, riffy, raw old school death metal? Yes sir, I'd like me some more of that. Thankfully Whorrid delivers some good old fashioned mid-paced death metal in the vein of Autopsy and Master. No it's not original, but it doesn't suck, so who cares? I'd rather listen to a good nostalgia act than some wankers with shitty ideas, and Whorrid are exactly what they describe themselves to be: No frills, no bullshit, straight ahead old school metal.

This demo seems to be more of a tribute than an original recording; while all the songs are originals, none of them stand out as Whorrid material. Each track sounds like either an Autopsy song or a Master song, or some combination of the two. There's nothing inherently wrong with this, and it may have been the band's goal from the beginning, but whenever I hear old school styled records, I like to hear something that sets the group apart from the groups they are paying tribute to. A good example of this would be Dekapitator's We Will Destroy... You Will Obey - now that record was almost exclusively an Exodus and Possessed tribute, but there were definitely unique moments on it. Whorrid needs to put some personal flair into their songs and then they will have a monster slab of metal.

With buzzing, thick guitar tones, pulsing bass lines, and heavy, restrained drumming, Whorrid have managed to come up with four tracks of death metal straight from the early nineties. The production is raw, but not weak, the drums are organic, no triggers are found here, and the overall sound is just pummeling. I may have heard it all before, but it's a sound one never gets tired of, and in a world of hyper blasting, ultra guttural, uber fast, technical death metal, this is a welcomed change of pace.
