  • Slither's Review:
In the realm of demos, the spectrum runs from the unbearable to the shockingly impressive. Sometimes I think the impressive ones are a bit deceptive because of what they get compared to, but nevertheless, the package in my hand is on the side of the spectrum that does not induce suicide. The band is Vengince, and the packaging is outstanding; let it be known to all bands that the brownie points earned from a well put together press kit are never a bad thing for your review.

Vengince have found for themselves a sound that is highly unique and coupled it with a singer that has great potential, but a penchant for going off in the wrong direction on occasion. Imagine if you will any given Mike Patton vehicle with a thrashier take on things and few ideas taken from Nu-Metal and Hardcore. The guitar playing constantly skirts the line between Nu bounce and spastic Core, a feat that is not easily accomplished. The musicians are all competent and the album only suffers from some minor production flaws. Relentless (I fucking hate stage names) invokes an image of a very young Mike Patton still trying to find his niche. He complements the music most of the time, but every once in a while the vocals get way too close to the Durstian rap cadence side of things and a few angst-soaked clean parts made me cringe. Apart from those issues, this is an album that is most definitely a prelude to an excellent first release on a record label.

Having done the demo thing myself on several occasions, and engineered way too many of them while working at the studio, I like to offer advice sometimes in these reviews. A more present guitar tone would go a long way on a future recording, and avoiding those mentioned vocal leanings at all costs will not hurt. Oh yeah, samples, take it easy on the samples, but if you must use them, look to Rune and Ion Dissonance for proper application. All things considered, Vengince seem to be doing everything right and playing an impressive number of shows opening for prominent metal acts. I wish them luck, and look forward to a label debut.
