  • Lugubrious's Review:
Growing up as a young Metal fan nothing was better then finding a good compilation. It was an Earache compilation at fifteen that got me into the likes of At The Gates, Iron Monkey, The Haunted and a few others. The fact that these compilations are usually five bucks or under sweetens the deal. Mere pocket change for a chance to dive deeper into the underground, you just cannot beat that. Even now it is nice to hear one of these. Within half an hour you might hear your next favorite band, and you quickly learn which ones to avoid.

There is only one way to review a comp like that, and that is by individual song. Now the journey begins.

We start off with Censored, a very catchy Death Metal band from Switzerland that seems to take a few influences from the American scene. Minus the shitty growl about halfway through this track is great. The riffs are tighter than a dolphin's poop box, and the vocals are a nasty snarl that is decipherable but very metal. Off to a good start.

Next is Invoid from Germany. Starts off mid-tempo and at times slightly speeds up. This song loses me. 80% of it sounds like filler and repetitive riffs, dammit I need to wake up, enough of this.

Hopefully this next one is better. Ahh, the sweet sounds of Brutal Death Metal. Suffocated Art fit right in with all the other top Death Metal acts, nothing special but a perfect fit into your already abundant sick and twisted Metal collection.

Is this a bad attempt at being Grind? Someone tell Todesblei to fire their producer. Next.

Message to The Exorial. It is not a good thing to have a minute long sample to start off a song. Lucky for you guys I am digging this. Slow and steady, this melodic death metal band has caught my attention. This is one band that stands out from the rest, even ending with a nice piano piece. Very impressive.

Soul Devoured just sounds Metal on its own, so the music is no big surprise. This Death/Thrash piece from Austria know what metal is, but unfortunately the guitar is annoying me. The clean vocals midway through were not expected though, kudos to these guys for that one. I'd be interested in hearing more.

Nothing much to say about Slaine, except NEXT!!

Everyone go check out Misanthropic, now. What are you doing sitting here reading this still? GO BITCH!! German Death/Black at its best, this band defines what good metal is. Enjoy, I know I am.

Lindisfarne call themselves Pagan Metal. Give me Mithotyn or Finntroll any day.

YES!! Swiss Death Metal!!!! Tribes of Cain get three horns. Yes you read correctly, my toes can do amazing things.

Have you heard a Raw Black Metal band with little production before? If so then you know what to expect from Hellvetic Frost.

Lucuferi Excelsi managed to create the worst guitar sound to ever come from a professional band. When I was seventeen playing in my friend's shack no bigger then a large bathroom, we still had better sounding guitars then this. You fail, miserably, go home.

So far the Black Metal tracks on this compilation have seriously disappointed me. Sarnath, you have the chance to change this. It is all in your hands!! The intro is nice, a little guitar tune that sets the mood, adding great build up. The music is great, to bad the vocals are almost non existent. Get more vocals and come back to me, and ones that are not so damn weak.

At this point I am getting bored. Ever Since, you are not helping me any. This is a sad attempt at being atmospheric, not very impressive. The clean vocals and growls do not mix one bit, more like oil and water. Agathodaimon own you from here to the center of hell, good try though.

MacGyver has a mullet!! Funny stuff, mullets are the most hilarious haircut ever, whoever invented that must have one weird imagination. Oh shit I'm sorry was supposed to be finishing this review. Morrigu is Doom, and one of those Doom bands I hate. When people call Doom boring I usually want to hit them, Morrigu does not help my argument any. No no nooooooo, damn high pitch vocals. My testicles ache now thanks!!

So that's about it, a full idea of what to expect from this compilation. Not the best I have heard, but this sampler has some very strong stuff, and other bands better off discarded.
    3 out of 5
