Musashi's Review:
When I get a CD this good, I have to wonder what the hell is wrong. It is rare to receive demos of this quality. Bands that sound like this usually have record deals or have some sort of big buzz around them. Is there some good reason why Tread is tucked away in the Colorado Rockies instead of touring the states?Tread has supposedly been playing together since 1993. That might explain why they are so tight. The drums, bass and guitar lock together in perfect synch throughout Hiding Behind The Sun. They also claim that their CD "is tuned to the resonant frequency of the human skull" which, if my memory of high school science serves me correctly, means that if this CD is played loud enough, my head could explode. Nonetheless, I will take the risk because it is refreshing to listen to a demo that is so well produced.
Tread claim that their goal is to develop "the world's foremost sonic alloy." When a band aims that high, they cannot help but fall short. However, they certainly got a lot closer than most bands. Tread manages to blend many different metal styles and sounds into a very listenable composite. Tread fits squarely into the radio metal category but have enough depth to appeal to various groups of metalheads. I hear influences from Hendrix and Sabbath to Down and Sevendust to Lamb of God and Slayer. It is apparent that Tread is not limited by who they think they can steal from.
Hiding Behind The Sun is an excellent CD from an excellent band. I definitely recommend listening to it as a gauge for what an independently released CD should sound like.
