  • Redwolff's Review:
I met the bassist, Dan, at a Burn Guitars show, and he told me about Tirade. Both bands are kind of spin-offs or side projects of Mephiskapheles, a local ska band with a pretty big following and a number of albums out. While Burn Guitars is a heavy, low-pitched invective against guitars (with three bass players and a drummer, live, the band is more felt than heard), Tirade is more of a bouncy metal-core enterprise.

Tirade's demo has four songs, "Dominate," "Aggro-Intellectual," "Brothers Inc." and "Dieselfuge." In general, the mix is very good, it's crisp and brings out each instrument and the vocals to an equal degree, and helps the three-member band sound complete. This is a better mix than some of the major-label albums I've reviewed for Summary Judgment. Except for the chorus of "Brothers Inc." and part of "Dieselfuge," the singer shouts out the lyrics, which can get monotonous, so it's lucky the lyrics can stand on their own.

With polish, "Dominate" could definitely be a single. The chorus is very catchy, the beat is energetic and there are some hook-y guitar and bass chords. Despite the fact that the song is about rising up against the oppressor of the little guy, it's upbeat and happy, almost an anthem. "Aggro-Intellectual" is a more aggressive song, which begins with a fast tempo and the whole band shouting out the chorus of "A.I.!", then slows down and demands that the listener pay attention to the message. "Brothers Inc." is my favorite off of this demo, most of the song is rapped rather than shouted, and then there is the melodic singing on the chorus. "Dieselfuge," the last song on this demo, also allows the singer to demonstrate that he can certainly sing, and on key at that, but otherwise is too repetative and not as solid as the other three songs. However, if you pay attention, you'll notice a cool bassline at the end that takes the song out well. It's a nice touch.

Overall, this is a strong demo from three talented musicians. And the website is pretty slick, too.
