Metal Militia's Review:
Hello all, allow me to introduce myself, I am the Metal Militia, and I'm the new guy. From now on I'll be helping out with the demo reviews. Okay, that's enough with the formalities, on to the music.Throcult is a five-piece project from Denver Colorado. They formed in 1997, and call their style "Industrial Black Death." I can hear the industrial aspect of the music easily, but the death sound is underwhelming to say the least, and there is no black metal anywhere in this album. My complaint about the album is that it is boring - lyrically, musically, emotionally. Lyrically, they use just about every cliche in the book. Take the song, "Green River," for example; it starts off with some promise, a very menacing riff and an overall haunting feel to it. About a minute into it a sample from CNN's "Serial Killers" informs us that, "more bodies have been found by the river." Vocalist, Chris Vigil, enters at this point with some spoken "scary" words. Basically, he finds the body that the Green River Killer has left and takes it home to mutilate it and defile it. It's an interesting concept, except that it's been done one thousand thirty seven times before. The speaking part plods along with the music dragging not far behind throughout the rest of the song. The only noticeable change in the song is the chorus, where the lines are screamed/growled, but this change doesn't help, it only makes the song more cliche and predictable.
On a more positive note, the presentation of the album is very professional. I can see that they put a lot of time and effort into creating the artwork set up of the front and back covers. Unfortunately the music is really nothing to get excited about.
It's clear that Throcult have the ability to make some decent music, the good riffs they do come up with are very good, there just aren't enough of them. My suggestion for the next album is to work on developing more interesting riffs, stop being so repetitive, and don't use so many cliche's, or if you do, do it in a more interesting way.
