  • Solomon's Review:
Upon glancing over this band's bio sheet and seeing the words "melodic death metal," my interest immediately turned in the group's favor. The fact they're Italian was a bit of a head-turner, as well. Not to be confused with my favorite Italian head-turner, Monica Bellucci. Now, if Monica Bellucci played in an Italian melodic death metal band, then I would run out of heads to turn... sorry, it's way past my bedtime. You'd think I'd be tired of every damn metal band on the planet trying to sound like At The Gates or their pale cousin In Flames. The underground crew complains about the repetition of mainstream nu-metal, but please, the non-commercial sector of heavy music has plenty of copycats and imitators to go around. How many staccato dah-dah-dah Swedish guitar lines can one stomach over the course of a decade? Plenty! I still haven't grown completely disenchanted with the Gothenberg method of madness, and Of Promises Decayed is no exception. For an unsigned band (at the time, anyway, now they have a deal), This Illusion produces some very good NWOSDM-via-Italy on this six-track release. Nothing too original or explosive, but the album sounds good, recording-wise, and the musicians have a solid fix on how the style should be done. The only real criticism may be that the clean vocals that pepper some of the tracks leave a little to be desired. Either they should have left them out or found another way of doing them, but this isn't enough to mar the overall product.

If you click on the band's weblink above, be aware this Italian troupe no longer goes under the "This Illusion" moniker. They are now known as Bleed In Vain and are recording their first full-length for the Voice of Life label, looking at an early 2004 release.
