  • Savage's Review:
The Driven strike me as band that doesn't want to be discovered. Why do you ask? There was no bio included in the press kit and their website no longer exists. Their name is also shared by at least two other bands. Therefore, I really cannot give you any pertinent info about the band besides who they are. Judging from the photos inside the CD sleeve, they pretty much look like any other band. Lead singer Scott Oliva sports a long flowing metal mane, drummer Mike Provanzale the trendy shaved look, while guitarist Joe Marselle and bassist Rob Lauritsen look like a pair of cover- paying half barrel party college students . Their demo however, is jam packed with 18 songs that definitely have potential.

Vocally, Scott falls somewhere between Ray Gillen and Dave Wyndorf. He has the ability to hit the high notes, albeit not as powerful as Gillen but commendable nonetheless. Switching to the other end of the spectrum, Scott reaches the lower depths ala Wyndorf. Musically, The Driven showcases the old school stylings of Badlands intermingled with the newer stoner rock vibes of Monster Magnet. They are best described as stoners that amped up on meth before picking up their instruments. Joe provides some truly good solos that have the crunch of Zack Wilde and virtuosity of Jake E. Lee. I am very impressed with this demo. Gravity Clock makes use of a timeless "can't go wrong" formula.

In the end you come out feeling as though you've heard this before, but it still feels good and gets the job done. 18 tracks are a bit much to digest, but if The Driven can hone their press kit and get the website running again, they are talented enough to sell some albums!
