Musashi's Review:
Let me begin by saying that Spellgate is not metal and stands for everything I find cheesy. Nonetheless, Legends of Ardigm is a really good demo and if you are a "Trekkie," "Furry," "Dungeon Master," "Keebler Elf," "Orc," "Plushy," "Klingon," or some other kind of freak, then your mothership has landed.Spellgate classify themselves as "synth metal." Ain't no such thing! Metal is about real drums and real guitars, period. However, unmetal as they are, Darynlard and Dosashlia (Like your mother named you Dosashlia. Girl puhleeze!) are very adept at making real music with synthesizers and sequencers. The textures, rhythms and timbres are very evocative and sophisticated. I would venture a guess that they have been classically trained or at least fake it really well. If I was not so impressed (three frikkin' skulls) by the quality of the programming and the production, I would have filed this in the trash with my other favorite Canadian demos.
Despite the fact that I am really looking forward to "The Two Towers," I am not generally into fantasy and folklore. This music is really for unicorn lovers. Dosashlia has a pretty voice that puts you in the mind of fairies. Unfortunately, Spellgate do what I hate and drown out her voice in reverb. She sings on key, but does not enunciate and has poor technique. Please note that in most metal music, vocal technique is not always an issue. In this case, the vocals are everything. It is Dosashlia's job to narrate us through the fantastic world of Ardigm with all the spells and majik [sic].
I imagine there are a lot of fourteen year old girls out there that would believe you if you told them that Legends of Ardigm and the movie "Legend" would synch up perfectly just like "The Wizard of Oz" and Darkside of the Moon. Go on try it! A picture is worth a thousand words, so look at these two and make up your own review.
